What does AI Citations mean?

An AI citation is a source an AI system attributes to when generating an answer — a link or domain credit shown alongside the response. A citation means the engine retrieved the page and selected it as supporting material for the answer it produced.

Why does it matter?

Citations are the measurable unit of AI visibility: they drive referral traffic from answer engines and signal that the engine treats the page as trustworthy for a topic.

What does it look like in practice?

When an answer engine responds to 'what is llms.txt' and links the official proposal page, that link is a citation — the page was retrieved and credited in the answer.

Can I control which pages get cited?+

No engine publishes a citation control. You can improve the odds with crawlable, well-structured, source-friendly content, but retrieval and citation decisions are made by the engine.
